Things to do in Sydney as an Agency Nurse with total flexibility

Whether you’re a nurse arriving in Sydney for the first time, or you’re a local nurse looking to discover the hidden gems of the city between shifts, this guide is for you. NNA welcomes agency nurses from all around the globe and is keen to not only provide fun and stimulating working opportunities, but to also make Sydney feel like your home. Here is a bucket list of what to do in Sydney regardless of your budget and what your nursing agency schedule looks like.
Sydney Opera House
Starting with the most obvious choice, the Sydney Opera House is considered one of the most famous and distinctive buildings of the 20th century. If the beeping from the intravenous pumps or the nurse call bell is giving you a headache, do yourself a favour and visit one of the many theatres at the Opera House (or even do a backstage tour) and let your senses be amazed. The striking architecture makes for an impressive photo opportunity to send back home too.
A short 10-minute walk from the Opera House, you’ll find yourself at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. The fresh air and luscious green surrounding will help you unpack even the busiest of shifts.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
One of the best free activities to do in Sydney is to walk the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Though you can climb on it and experience Sydney from above, the views of the Opera House and Circular Quay are equally impressive on foot. The distance is 1.5km and will take around 20 minutes.
Once you arrive at The Rocks, one of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhoods, you’ll be greeted with cobbled laneways, historic buildings, great pubs and events all year round. Here you’ll experience why Sydney is so popular for tourists and locals alike. If you’re an early riser or need to venture near or on the bridge during your commute to work, seeing the sunrise against the bridge will make for a great start to the day!
Bondi Beach
Get your much-needed dose of vitamin D at the beautiful Bondi Beach. Bondi is one of Australia’s most popular and well-known beach towns offering something for everyone. At the beach, the water is clear, there are plenty of outdoor picnic areas to share with friends, along with an array of cafes and pubs to check out if you need to relax after a long shift. If you’re in the mood for a stroll, the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is beautiful. It’s really popular, particularly on weekends, so embrace the freedom of agency nursing and choose to go during off-peak times.
Sydney Night Life
Sydney is full of great bars and pubs for you to decompress after a shift with some nursing mates. This includes a tequila bar in a repurposed carport down a CBD laneway, Bar 83, Sydney's highest bar and the Imperial Hotel's Drag'n'Dine night, the location for one of the most memorable Aussie films of all time – The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This is one of Sydney's most vibrant LGBTQIA+ venues. Sydney’s nightlife has something for everyone. Here is a great list of bars if visiting Sydney right now.
Luna Park
Nursing can be very serious sometimes so why not bring out your inner child and visit Luna Park? Get some fairy floss and take a seat on the ferris wheel whilst enjoying the views of Sydney Harbour. It’s a fun place to meet new friends and remind yourself not to take life too seriously.
Manly
One of the biggest benefits of agency nursing is you can choose when and where you work. This flexibility allows you to take day trips and explore incredible beaches, like Manly, without needing to take annual leave. This must-do ferry ride takes in all the sights of Sydney Harbour such as the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Bradleys Head, South Head, Dobroyd Head, and of course Manly Cove. Again, this ferry ride can get busy so if you jump aboard outside of peak times, the more pleasant the trip will likely be. Once you arrive, there is plenty to do including the Spit to Manly walk which is a 10km coastal adventure between the Spit Bridge and Manly.
Museums and Galleries
If you’re in need of a little culture, your choices are in abundance. From art to history, your days off will be well spent.
- Australian Museum
- Powerhouse Museum
- Museum of Contemporary Art Australia
Whilst exploring these cultural displays and galleries, it will be well worth your time to explore the beautiful architecture the city has on offer too. Places to check off your list are;
- Queen Victoria Building
- Government House
- Anzac Memorial
- One Central Park
